All Gloworm Products are designed in NZ to precise engineering standards. Following the design process, products are assembled in our own facility with components sourced from partner companies. Bruce Davey co-ordinates the design process in New Zealand, while the manufacturing of Gloworm Products is managed by Gloworm Co-owner Vaggelis Monogyios.
As Gloworm Products have been created to withstand the rigours of a harsh NZ outdoor environment. X-Series (X2, XS, XSV) lights are rated to IP67, meaning they can be submersed for up to 30 minutes in 1 meter of water (including the battery) whilst the CX is rated to IP65 and is therefore able to withstand jets of water from all directions.
Gloworm Products are built tough with few moving parts. We use durable materials such as aluminium, carbon fibre and polycarbonate to create a tough and robust product. Our lights can withstand a significant drop to a very hard surface, whilst our batteries are a little less robust and can take a drop from 2 meters without suffering considerable damage.
Whilst we could not programme our light level brightness to suit all users, we did make it possible to customise brightness levels to suit your needs. With a few clicks of the button you can change the default light level brightness to better suit your next adventure or race day requirements. This function is great if you want to conserve your battery by limiting your maximum brightness.
LED lights produce heat and are sensitive to excessive power. Without built in protection these characteristics can cause damage to a light. To ensure our lights withstand the test of time they all feature self-protection features that limit overheating of the electronics, overcharging of the batteries and excessive discharging. As a rider, you would never know this is occurring, however the light itself will constantly check temperature and power in an effort to make your experience the best possible.
A selection of Gloworm Products feature a Wireless Button – The TX. The TX allows you the control of your light remotely and most importantly functionality without needing to remove your hands from the bar. The TX can be used to control one or many lights either independently or synchronised. Once paired to a specific light or lights the TX cannot accidently control another Gloworm.
All Gloworm Products are compatible/include the Universal Mounting System. The system allows the use of the same mounting system across the range of lights, meaning you can use the same mount for different lights. The Universal Mounting System is also compatible with other common adventure product mounting systems.
The Gloworm XS, XSV and X2 are manufactured using a process called CNC machining. This involves cutting the shape of the light from a single block of aluminium using a computer-directed cutter in a controlled engineering environment. The process is relatively slow but very accurate and is common in the manufacturing of high end products.
The Gloworm Universal Mounting System provides unrivalled flexibility, allowing your light to be mounted to the helmet, bike or even headstrap.
From housing to circuitry Gloworm lights are carefully engineered from quality components.
Each Gloworm light features optics that can be changed to suit the preferences of the rider. Depending on the intended, changing the optics in a light can greatly improve the overall user experience. For extra convenience, each light set features a selection of optics/alternative optics.
We understand that Gloworm lights are designed to be used in the outdoors and exposed to the elements. That’s why we fit each light with high quality stainless steel hardware (bolts and screws). This means your light is going to keep looking good for years to come.
Gloworm lights are designed for the most extreme conditions. When it comes to water resistance, we design and test our products to comply to recognised IP (Ingress Protection) standards. Our lights are so well sealed that they can be exposed to continuous rain or even submersed (not the Gloworm CX). We designed them this way to ensure they could take whatever was thrown at them on almost any bicycle ride. The X-Series are tested to IP67 – meaning they can safely be submersed to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. The CX is tested to IP65 – meaning it can handle water jets from any angle (when the USB cover is closed).
The cables used on Gloworm Lights have been developed in conjunction with a specialist cable manufacturer. Cables on electronic equipment are an inherent weak point – so we created our cable to reduce this inherency and give your product a longer usable life. Paired with the fatigue resistant cable, are our new rubberized strain reliefs, designed to protect the cable as it enters the light. The combination of both components creates the perfect solution for cable protection in a high use outdoor environment.
Each Gloworm Light features the ability to customise the light levels. While our lights have default settings and are ready to go out of the box, they can also be modified to suit your individual needs. Default programming features Low, Medium and High light levels, however if this doesn’t work for you then it’s a relatively simple process to customise the light levels for your needs.
The CX and Alpha use an engineering method called Casting. Casting requires a mould machined from steel. Molten aluminium is then introduced to the mould to form the basic shape of the product. Once the product is removed from the mould, CNC machining is used for areas that require a higher degree of accuracy. Casting is a faster process and therefore this is reflected in the price of the CX and Alpha.
Our wireless button, the TX, is the ultimate in convenience. Using RF technology, a rider can control one or more lights from a single remote. Additionally, control can be independent (one button for each light) or synchronised – enabling control of one or both lights without the rider needing to lift their hands from the bar. Safety, Convenience and Efficiency.
We source only the most reliable and well-known brands when it comes to electronic components. Although it sometimes comes at a premium this is far outweighed by the reliability of a reputable company. Our lights are packed with high performance components – LEDs, resistors, capacitors, integrated circuits and inductors. Each from reputable brands such as Cree, Microchip and Texas Components, just to name a few.
Swap and change your lenses to customise a beam pattern that fits your needs.
The spot optic provides the narrowest beam. It is also the most efficient, allowing the greatest light output. It can be used in conjunction with another spot optic to gain the greatest possible output and therefore beam distance. This configuration is best used on the helmet to see down the trail or to spot the exit of a turn. Alternatively the spot could be paired with another optic type from an alternative light pattern.
This optic provides a wide rectangular beam, it utilises the light output to provide more peripheral light and less light in the vertical axis. While not as optically efficient as the Spot Optic, it provides very good output for a wide-angle optic. Two wide optics can be paired as a great option for use on the road, however when paired with either a flood or spot optic an effective hybrid beam can be created.
For a smooth diffused light pattern the Flood optic is the best option. It takes the light and smooths the light across the width of the beam, making it slightly easier on the eye and creating even light from left to right. A pair of Flood optics would provide a wall of smooth light, however in doing so a significant amount of light intensity would be lost compared to a pair of spot optics. The flood is best used in tandem with a spot or wide optic.
